DIY Jute Cord Hanger

I have been noticing these jute cord lanterns that are being posted all over Pinterest. They remind me of the macrame’ plant holders that I used to make when I was a kid (back in the 70’s). SO I thought I would try my hand at making a DIY jute cord hanger as a plant holder. Here is how my experiment turned out.

DIY Jute cord planter
You can see I used my “go to” tin can painted bronze as my planter.

Step by Step instructions:

1. Decide what you are going to display in your jute cord hanger

Many people use a mason jar and put a candle in it to use as a lantern. I decided to use one of my recycled tin cans as a plant holder.

2. Cut your jute cord to size

measure cord with tin can
Take your mason jar or tin can planter and measure the jute cord starting from bottom , then around the top, then back around to the bottom. Take that measurement and multiply by 10. Cut 8 pieces of jute cord that size.

3. Tie your anchor knot

tie anchor knot
Take your 8 pieces of jute cord and divide into 2 bunches of 4 strands. Cross the bunches at the center and tie an “anchor knot”. The most popular “anchor knot” I saw was a lanyard knot. I watched 2 YouTube videos on how to tie such a knot….my head was spinning. Each video said it was an “easy knot”….well….not for me. I ended up tying just a plain ol’ knot.

4. Measure bottom of jar or planter to start your first tie

tie strands
Take the measurement of the BOTTOM of your jar or planter and divide in half. Tie 2 strands together at that distance (half the length of the bottom of your jar or planter) and continue all the way around. The goal is for these knots to “cradle” your jar or planter. I would suggest doing a “test” after you tie these first 8 knots to see if the jar or planter is snuggly cradled in between the knots.

5. Continue tying the strands

Continue tying knots picking up alternating strands, from the row before, after each round. Continue this until you have tied enough to cover your jar or planter. (I have a confession…..I ended up tying mine closer together than pictured here. When I tested my tin can in it initially it looked like a drum from The Little Drummer Boy. SO I tightened them up.

6. “Test hang” your jar or planter

“Test hang” your jar or planter after you have done enough rows of knots to cover completely.

7. Final product

Since mine is a planter I chose a succulent plant for my final reveal.

I really did enjoy doing this project. It turned out better than I thought. I think I now need to do my research on how to tie a lanyard knot….If I master it MAYBE it can be one of my future blogs. :):):):)

Have a great week!
